The medical staff - doctors, nurses, radiology assistants, paramedics and administrative staff - stayed in Greece for a total of ten days. These were long-standing or most popular workers, who during the Christmas parties last year received certificates of thanks from the owner of the hospitals , Ing. Sotrios Zavalianis for their work, along with a voucher for an all inclusive holiday for two people to Crete. The stay on Greece's largest island was divided into 3 dates, from 27 May to 28 June 2017, in the resort of Gouves, less than 20 km from the capital Heraklion, at the Gouves Bay hotel complex.
Most of the staff also took advantage of the offer of optional tours around Crete, from east to west and from north to south, to all the places of historical interest. They learned about the history of Crete from the time of the Minoan civilisation to the present day. During the bus rides to see the historical sites, they listened to captivating myths from Greek mythology relating to the island of Crete, as legends tell that it was here that Zeus, the ruler of the gods, was born and grew up.
"We returned from our holiday in Crete refreshed and full of impressions and experiences. In our second term, we met a good group of people and had a lot of fun, had a wonderful frolic in the waves of the sea, tried jet skiing and a bit of adrenaline in the nearby water park. We visited the giant aquarium and markets in Heraklion - the atmosphere was indescribable. Some even enjoyed shopping in the local shops. Others rented a car and took various excursions. In the evening we talked about our experiences over a glass of ouzo in the hotel bar or in a nice taverna overlooking the sea. We also made friends with some of our colleagues from Beroun and Hořovice and with the local staff - Imelda, Matele and the cook, who were very friendly and taught us Greek words," radiology assistant Jana Flégrová summarizes her impressions.
"The weather was good not only for swimming, but also for exploring the history of Crete, its monuments and interesting facts from Greek history. It was a lovely, hassle-free stay, including friendly service and delicious Greek cuisine. None of us could resist tasting the authentic Greek honey, good wine and the famous Greek olives. We bought home not only the aforementioned goodies, but also souvenirs - mugs, ceramics, luxury spices. We also had friendly meetings with the staff of the already mentioned hospitals, comparing our workplaces at home, our experiences. We now highly recommend Crete to all our friends and hope to visit again in the future. Everything worked out wonderfully and the memories of Crete will stay with us for a long time," says nurse Iveta Chmelíková.
"Once again we send a big thank you to Sotirios Zavalianis for a wonderful holiday," add the two employees of the Multiscan Cancer Centre in Pardubice.
Most of our holidaymakers visited the capital Heraklion with its ancient streets and markets and the famous archaeological museum. Then there are the palaces preserved from the Minoan period in Knossos, near Heraklion, and the palace of Phaistos. Some went to visit the Arkadi Monastery or the island of Spinalonga, which has a rich history and from 1903 to 1957 lepers were interned there.
They had the opportunity to bathe in the Aegean and also in the Libyan Sea at the legendary beach of Matale, which is lined by a cliff with holes that served as graves in Roman times. They visited other historically interesting sites and places where they were able to taste excellent local wines. All the hospital staff unanimously praised the virtues of Greek cuisine. They all returned home safely and brought back for their loved ones to taste, for example, the famous Cretan honey, olives and olive oil. In this way, they joined dozens of other employees of the Multiscan Cancer Centre in Pardubice and the hospitals in Hořovice and Beroun, who have been able to visit other Greek destinations such as Kos, Rhodes or Crete in the past.
