Multiscan through the eyes of MUDr. Aleš Hlávka

"The environment has evolved incredibly in these 21 years, I would say it was medieval. That was before Multiscan, of course. Today, it is a state-of-the-art facility that provides oncological care for our entire region," describes the transformation of Multiscan's head physician of radiation oncology, Aleš Hlávka, MD, PhD.

I have the privilege of being the Chief of Radiation Oncology at Multiscan. Anything about me? I have two children, Ivan and Pavla, a wife Dagmar and a golden retriever named Cookie.

My main job is radiation therapy, treating cancer patients with radiation. I'm involved in the radiation planning process, and I have to say, I live that work. It fulfills me and gives me great meaning. I start by painting lines on the patient's skin on the planning CT scanner, and then I draw on the computer the volumes to be irradiated and the organs that must not be damaged in the CT image. Then the physicists plan it and I evaluate whether the plan is workable. This is a very simplistic way of putting it, but in reality, making plans is a very complex process and I have to use all the knowledge and experience I have gained in my life.

You know, when I was coming out of college, I was thinking about a children's or an ARU. But in 1999, I didn't have much choice. I was looking for a place and I wanted Pardubice. From the very beginning I gravitated towards computers, and here one works with technology in radiotherapy all the time. I came here to look at oncology, and I've stayed here. Oncology grabbed me and wouldn't let go. The environment has evolved incredibly in those 21 years, I would say it was medieval to what it was before. We typed everything on a typewriter, the radiation rooms were in the basement below cardiology, going there in the evening was a fright.
This was before Multiscan, of course.

The hospital built a new radiation building and then Mr. Zavalianis came along and built an MRI, bought a linear accelerator and a CT scanner -,and today it's a state-of-the-art facility that provides cancer care for our entire region.

We are one of the most comprehensive oncology centres, practically all the cancer treatment that is possible is carried out here. We have very modern equipment, a beautiful environment. If you are interested in professional growth, there is no problem. Even in terms of scientific activity, nobody is against it and we try to help everybody. On the other hand, we don't force anyone into it. It's a good group here. And we know we can turn to each other. Radiotherapy in Pardubice was brought to a very high level, one of the highest in our country, by Associate Professors Vaňásek and Doležel. The methods we use are still being introduced in some departments elsewhere. I would almost say that some people in Prague don't even dream about all this.

I like modern technology very much and I think that if I have time, we will introduce more, I already have some ideas. But I would need a lot more colleagues. We take both radiation and clinical oncologists, and of course nurses. It would be an honor to be able to work with you.

Work with us.

Do you want to work for a modern company that cares about its employees? At Multiscan we are looking for radiation and clinical oncologists as well as nurses.
