The Controversy in Oncology has traditionally been organized by Multiscan and under the auspices of the Comprehensive Oncology Centre of the Pardubice Region (KOC), it was sponsored by the Czech Society of Oncology ČLS JEP and held under the auspices of the Society of Radiation Oncology, Biology and Physics JEP.
"This is one of the important professional oncology conferences, which has built a significant position during the first seven years and many participants like to return to us," says Iveta Kolářová, M.D., Ph.D., Deputy Director for Clinical and Radiation Oncology. During the two-day conference, a total of 24 leading experts from comprehensive oncology centres not only from the Czech Republic but also distinguished guests from abroad spoke.
The opening ceremony was attended by JUDr. Martin Netolický, Ph.D., Governor of the Pardubice Region, Ing. MUDr. Josef Fusek, Dr.Sc., Dean of the Faculty of Health Studies of the University of Pardubice, on behalf of VZP the Director of its regional branch in Hradec Králové and Pardubice Ing. Michal Provazník, for the patient organizations, the chairwoman of the Club of Oncological Patients Pardubice, Mrs. Alena Nováková, the general director of the Hospital of the Pardubice Region a.s. MUDr. Tomáš Gottvald and the Councillor for Health of the Pardubice Region Ing. Ladislav Valtr. At the beginning, many members of the Honorary Board remembered the director of Multiscan, MUDr. Jan Calta, since whose death more than one year has passed and who contributed significantly to the establishment of modern oncology in Pardubice.
This year's "controversies" were devoted to therapeutic procedures in the treatment of breast cancer, tumours of the digestive tract, the future of immunotherapy, monitoring of patients after treatment and issues related to modern techniques of radiotherapy of cancer, the advantages and disadvantages of proton therapy.
"On Thursday, foreign participants MUDr. Zuzana Lovasova from the Oncology Clinic in Västeräs (Sweden) and Assoc. MUDr. Josef Kovařík, Ph.D. from Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals (Great Britain)," says doc. MUDr. Jaroslav Vaňásek, CSc., Head of the KOC Pardubice Region, who was also the expert guarantor of this conference. A very interesting lecture on psychological first aid for oncologists was given by doc. PhDr. Radek Ptáček, Ph.D., who works at the psychiatric clinic of the 1st Faculty of Medicine of Charles University and New York University in Prague.
On Friday, the big star of our conference, prof. Dr.med. Nadia Harbeck, Ph.D. from the University Hospital in Munich (Germany), she dealt with endocrine treatment of metastatic breast cancer. The next block was devoted to lectures mainly on the concept of oncological care in the Czech Republic, the director of the Masaryk Cancer Institute, prof. MUDr. Jan Žaloudík, CSc. and the President of the Czech Oncological Society doc. MUDr. Jana Prausová, Ph.D., who presented the establishment of two National Cancer Centres in Prague and Brno. Director of the Institute of Health Information and Statistics doc. RNDr. Ladislav Dušek, Ph.D. drew attention to the increasing number of cancers, as well as to the significant successes of the Czech Republic in the fight against breast and prostate cancer, but unfortunately also to the decreasing number of medical staff to take care of these patients.
"However, the following discussion has shown that the planned increase in money for medical faculties and the related increase in the number of students, future doctors, is sufficient," adds Vít Ulrych, MD, a physician and spokesman for the Multiscan Cancer Centre.
The conference consisted of five expert thematic blocks. The total number of participants was more than 200 oncologists, surgeons, urologists and other specialists. At the end of the first day of the conference, the popular music group Buty performed during the social evening.
Preparations have already begun for the IX edition of this professional symposium, which will be held in May 2018.
