I'm going in for radiotherapy

How the irradiation takes place

Preparation for prostate irradiation

1 General instructions and information

Our workplace is one of the modernly equipped workplaces providing radiation treatment. We provide treatment with linear accelerators, brachytherapy and therapeutic X-ray equipment. The preparation of radiation treatment is a demanding process and consists of several sequential steps. A team of physicians, physicists and radiology assistants are involved in the preparation of the radiation plan and the implementation of the radiation treatment.

The average duration of irradiation is 2-8 weeks.

Please report to Building 30 (on the left behind the main entrance to the hospital, behind the trafika) on the 1st floor for a CT scan on thefirst day. This is a conventional computed tomography (CT) scan to determine the exact anatomical conditions in the area of planned radiation. We will draw marks on your body in green paint, so please bring older underwear and a small towel to lie on during the radiation treatment. At the same time, you will be informed in advance about the method and duration of the irradiation. This visit may take approximately 1-2 hours.

On the next designated day, you will report back to the 1st floor of the building at the agreed time for CT simulation and review of the radiation plan. Be sure to bring a small towel this time as well. Red marks will be drawn on your body and you must keep them visible throughout your radiation treatment. Of course, you can wash yourself. You will then go down to the ground floor and be irradiated for the first time on linear accelerator 1, door number 017 or linear accelerator 2, door number 004. On this day you can spend 2-4 hours at our workplace.

Onthe following days you will be irradiated every working day. We also irradiate some patients on Saturdays and Sundays, as determined by the doctor. The radiology assistant will let you know the time you will be coming in for treatment. The time is approximate and cannot always be kept exactly.

During your radiation treatment, the initial process - CT focus and CT simulation - may be repeated if directed by your physician.

There will be a weekly visit by a physician working in the RTA outpatient clinic and blood draws as indicated by the physician. In the event of a medical problem, notify the radiology assistant who will arrange for a same day review by a physician.

Patients who are also having chemotherapy must have a blood count check weekly.

On the last day of your radiation treatment, your doctor will make an appointment for a check-up in the Radiotherapy Outpatient Department, usually in 3 to 4 weeks. If you have any difficulties after radiation, you can come to the outpatient clinic earlier in the office hours: weekdays 8:30am- 12:30pm.
