The second largest healthcare company in the Czech Republic, Akeso Group, earned CZK 300 million before taxes this year. The company's turnover was just under CZK 3 billion. This is according to the company's preliminary financial results. The company also said it plans to launch massive investments worth more than 2.5 billion this year.

"We're trying to grow organically, not to be too indebted and to work as efficiently as possible. We have some of the most modern and
most efficient hospitals in the Czech Republic. We try to invest most of the money we make back into the hospitals," said Akeso Group CEO and owner Sotirios Zavalianis.

The Akeso business includes the Multiscan Pardubice Oncology and Radiology Centre, the Hořovice Hospital and the Beroun Rehabilitation Hospital. The turnover of Akeso Holding, which employs about 1,700 people, is around CZK 3 billion. The healthcare provided by Akeso is covered by the general health insurance system. The company intends to expand its activities considerably this year.

Billions in modernisation

Around CZK 1.6 billion will be spent on expanding capacities at the hospital in Hořovice. These are to increase by 80 percent. "All of our capacities are exhausted, people have noticed the high quality and have started coming to us from all over the country, so waiting times have started to increase, which we need to reduce," Zavalianis said about the expansion of the hospital with a completely new wing.
The second big investment Zavalianis is directing a little further away, to Beroun, where the Mental Rehabilitation Centre, which has the ambition to become the best psychiatric workplace in the Czech Republic, will be built in the new year at a cost of about CZK 1 billion. "We have been dealing with the body for many years, but I realised that we have stopped looking at health in a holistic way. So now it is time to focus on the soul as well," he added. "Three and a half million Czechs suffer from some kind of mental illness. We do not want to do classical psychiatry, but psychological rehabilitation," Zavalianis added.
The Greek expatriate, who has been working in the Czech healthcare sector for almost 20 years, is financing the expansion almost entirely from the group's profits. The group's loans from banks now amount to around CZK 130 million. Zvalianis was also successful in the EY Entrepreneur of the Year competition this year, where he won the top prize for the Central Bohemia region.
This December, Multiscan, a company belonging to Akeso Holding, opened a new clinical oncology building. It unifies some of the operations previously divided into several locations on the site. Originally, the company leased several outpatient clinics in the hospital and the facilities were sometimes in inadequate premises. Zavalianis has invested CZK 100 million in it.
