Testicular cancer affects about 500 men each year, mostly between the ages of eighteen and forty. Thirty of them die. Testicular cancer is one of the curable types of tumours. Treatment outcomes have improved significantly over the last decade due to advances in diagnosis and treatment. Today, more than 85% of patients can be cured, even in the presence of metastatic disease. The testicular self-examination method is not a preventive method, but it is an early detection method and can therefore act as a prevention of advanced disease.
Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in the Czech Republic. In 2011, the number of newly diagnosed breast cancers in women reached 6 620, which represents almost 124 cancers per 100 000 women. In the same year, 2 032 women died of breast cancer, representing 38 deaths per 100 000 women.
The most common gynaecological cancers are carcinoma of the uterine body, ovary and cervix.
In the Czech Republic, 1,000 new cases of cervical cancer are diagnosed annually. There is a known link between cancer and infection with high-risk papillomaviruses, as well as the relatively slow development of precancer - the precursor of cancer. Relatively reliable diagnostic and therapeutic methods are available to detect and eradicate precancers. An organised screening programme, which has been running in its current form in the Czech Republic since 2008, is crucial for the success of secondary prevention - detection and elimination of precancers. In addition to the well-known principles of safe sex and non-smoking, the possibility of vaccination with prophylactic vaccines against human papillomavirus infection is a new feature of primary prevention. In the Czech Republic, girls between the ages of 13 and 14 can be vaccinated with vaccines that are fully covered by health insurance companies.
On the occasion of World Cancer Day, we would also like to draw your attention to other ongoing screening programmes in the Czech Republic. In January 2014, targeted invitations to citizens for preventive examinations not only for cervical cancer but also for breast and colorectal cancer were launched. The Multiscan Oncology Centre, in cooperation with the Pardubice Region Hospital Holding, deals with the comprehensive treatment of solid tumours, including breast, gynaecological and testicular cancers. The treatment includes chemotherapy, radiation, targeted (biological) treatment, hormonal and supportive treatment.
Brachytherapy (internal radiation) may also be a specific part of the treatment of cervical cancer. At our department, we use the Eclipse planning system with the BrachyVision module for planning, we perform standard 3D planning with fusion of CT, MR or PET images. During treatment, we combine 3D intracavitary application with interstitial application using a unique needle application system. Thanks to this unique technique, our facility is sought after by patients from other regions of the Czech Republic.
