The meeting was opened by oncologist Miroslav Žiaran, M.D., who reminded that the basic pillar of successful care for patients in advanced stages of the disease is interdisciplinary cooperation. His words were followed by Zuzana Valešová, M.D. from the Geriatric Centre of Pardubice Hospital, who in her lecture focused on the topic of geriatric frailty and pointed out that early recognition of deteriorating conditions in the elderly requires not only expert knowledge but also a deeply individual approach.
The programme continued with a look into the world of the smallest patients. MUDr. Barbora Červíčková, a paediatrician, presented the current state of paediatric palliative care in the Pardubice Region and stressed the importance of linking regional services so that families are not left alone to care for seriously ill children. An equally strong topic was perinatal hospice care presented by Bc. Alena Peremská, MHA, who presented sensitive support for families facing the loss of a baby.
A deep ethical dimension was brought into the discussion by Th. Lic. Ing. René Milfajt, Ph.D., who in his contribution precisely defined the boundary between palliative sedation and euthanasia and explained the principle of double effect, which brings ethical certainty to medical practice.
The seminar offered participants not only an overview of current topics, but also a space for discussion and sharing of experiences across disciplines. The whole afternoon showed that palliative medicine is not only about pain control, but above all about human closeness, respect and the courage to raise topics that are still among the most difficult in our society.
