Multiscan Oncology and Radiology Centre has launched a new linear accelerator

On Tuesday 12 January 2016, the Multiscan Oncology and Radiology Centre launched a new linear accelerator from the American company Varian Medical Systems. The state-of-the-art irradiator, which is currently available in the Czech Republic, will further improve the quality of treatment for cancer patients in the Pardubice Region and part of the Central Bohemia Region. This is the largest single investment in health care equipment in the Pardubice Region last year, amounting to CZK 119.5 million.

Eighty-five percent of the total acquisition costs will be covered by EU funds obtained through the Integrated Operational Programme. The remaining fifteen percent was paid by Multiscan entirely from its own resources. The Multiscan Oncology and Radiology Centre is part of the Comprehensive Oncology Centre of the Pardubice Region, which is one of 13 comprehensive oncology centres (COCs) in the Czech Republic that are guaranteed by the Czech Oncological Society and are authorised to perform all oncological and ionising radiation treatments, including expensive cytostatic and targeted biological therapies. For irradiation of patients with cancer the department has two linear accelerators, two cesium irradiators designed mainly for non-cancer radiotherapy and one irradiator for brachytherapy. The new TrueBeam accelerator has a technology that represents a further qualitative and quantitative shift in radiation treatment. It is equipped with a multi-blade collimator (HD MLC120) suitable for stereotactic irradiation, a portal dosimetry device with amorphous silicon, an OBI system (a system for 2D/2D imaging or 3D CBCT imaging of the patient's position) enabling the IGRT (image-guided radiotherapy) technique and a 6D irradiation table. As part of the installation of the new irradiator, the planning and verification system was also upgraded.

"The machine, which is one of the most advanced accelerators in the world, has a more sophisticated irradiation system. In addition to hitting the target volume precisely, it also offers continuous adjustment of the patient's position according to his anatomical conditions, minimizing the dose load on healthy tissues and ensuring the optimal dose to the target volume in the shortest possible time," said doc. MUDr. Jaroslav Vaňásek, CSc.

Oncological diseases are a serious problem worldwide, affecting people at an increasingly younger age. Together with cardiovascular diseases, they are one of the most common causes of death in the world and in the Czech Republic. Thanks to early diagnosis and new treatments, the number of patients will continue to rise.

"Doctors and other healthcare workers of the KOC Pardubice Region are among the leading experts in their chosen field. Some of them are involved not only in treatment, but also in teaching at three medical faculties, in postgraduate medical studies in the fields of radiation and clinical oncology, and in undergraduate and graduate education of other health care professions. These high professional standards are reflected in all aspects of our centre's services and ensure that every patient receives the best possible care," said Multiscan Cancer and Radiology Centre spokesman Vít Ulrych, MD.

"We appreciate the mutual cooperation, which is evidenced by the status of the Comprehensive Oncology Centre of the Pardubice Region and the possibility of purchasing new devices that provide more comfortable and gentle treatment for our patients," said the CEO of the Hospital of the Pardubice Region, a.s. MUDr. Tomáš Gottvald. On that occasion, the Governor of the Pardubice Region, JUDr. Martin Netolický, thanked Multiscan for the good cooperation with the Pardubice Hospital.
"Thanks to what has been built here, patients not only have a pleasant environment for difficult treatment, but also the best treatment options. Although on average every third person in the Czech Republic gets cancer, the prognosis for a cure is higher every year. Let us therefore appreciate this facility, which is equipped at the European level, as well as the top-notch team that takes care of patients here," said Vice-Heim and Councillor for Health of the Pardubice Region Ing. Roman Línek.

"Every third adult citizen in the Czech Republic suffers from cancer. The good news is that we are already able to help patients and many of them will be cured or have their lives significantly prolonged," said the President of the Czech Oncological Society doc. MUDr. Jana Prausová, PhD.
