Controversies in oncology

15. 5. 2017

On 11 and 12 May 2017, one of the largest oncology congresses in the Czech Republic "Controversies in Oncology" took place in Dříteč near Pardubice. It was the 7th edition of the event, which traditionally brought many prominent Czech and foreign doctors to the Pardubice Region. The importance of the event is evidenced by the number of guests present and the patronages granted.

The Controversy in Oncology has traditionally been organized by Multiscan and under the auspices of the Comprehensive Oncology Centre of the Pardubice Region (KOC), it was sponsored by the Czech Society of Oncology of the Czech Academy of Medical Sciences (ČLS JEP) and held under the auspices of the Society of Radiation Oncology, Biology and Physics of the JEP.

"This is one of the important professional oncology conferences, which has built a significant position during the first six years and many participants like to come back to us", says Iveta Kolářová, M.D., Ph.D., Deputy for Clinical and Radiation Oncology. During the two-day conference, a total of 26 leading experts from comprehensive oncology centres not only from the Czech Republic but also distinguished guests from abroad spoke.

The opening ceremony was attended by JUDr. Martin Netolický, Ph.D., Governor of the Pardubice Region, Ing. MUDr. Josef Fusek, Dr.Sc., Dean of the Faculty of Health Studies of the University of Pardubice, on behalf of VZP the Director of its regional branch in Hradec Králové and Pardubice Ing. Michal Provazník, for the patient organizations, the chairwoman of the Club of Oncological Patients Pardubice Mrs. Alena Nováková, the director of the Hospital of the Pardubice Region a.s. MUDr. Tomáš Gottvald. At the beginning of the conference, the participants held a minute of silence in memory of the late director of Multiscan MUDr. Jan Calta.

This year's "controversies" were mainly devoted to therapeutic procedures in the treatment of breast cancer, tumours of the digestive tract, the future of immunotherapy and issues related to modern techniques of radiotherapy of cancer, the advantages and disadvantages of proton therapy.

"The introductory lecture was devoted to the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma by Tomáš Šálek, MD, President of the Slovak Oncological Society. In the next session on the Perspectives of Czech Oncology, the Director of the Masaryk Cancer Institute, Prof. Jan Žaloudík, M.D., CSc. and Director of the Institute of Health Information and Statistics doc. RNDr. Ladislav Dušek, Ph.D.," adds doc. MUDr. Jaroslav Vaňásek, CSc., Head of the KOC Pardubice Region, who was also the expert guarantor of this conference.

On Friday, another foreign participant, Prof. Gal Markel from Israel, gave a lecture on the currently highly topical topic - immunotherapy treatment of solid tumours. The radiotherapy section was opened on Friday with a lecture by Prof. Michael Beard from Liverpool, a world figure in radiation oncology - on the hopes, misinformation and clinical evidence of proton therapy, who currently sees no major advantages of proton therapy over photon therapy. On a similar topic, Prof. Jiří Petera, M.D., Ph.D., head of the oncology department in Hradec Králové, gave his presentations, who concluded by saying that the cost of protons is on average 10 times higher than that of photons and listed only a few selected diagnoses that are suitable for proton therapy according to the recommendations of German and English professional societies, which also copies the recommendations of the Czech professional society of radiation oncology, and the head of radiation oncology at the Masaryk Cancer Institute, prof. Pavel Šlampa, CSc, who sees the future of protons more as a complement to photon therapy, the problems of protons are in the uncertainty of planning and their cost-effectiveness ratio.

"The conference included six expert thematic sessions. The total number of participants was more than 200 oncologists, surgeons, urologists and other specialties. A novelty of this year's edition was the filming of selected interesting lectures on YouTube, which we will make available to the professional public on request, so that colleagues who could not come to our congress could also listen to them", says Vít Ulrych, MD, physician and spokesman of the Multiscan Cancer Centre.

At the end of the first day of the conference, the popular music group Jelen performed during the social evening.

Preparations for the 8th edition of this professional symposium, which will take place in May 2018, have already begun.
