The fourteenth edition of the Controversies in Oncology conference confirmed that it is one of the respected professional platforms for sharing experiences and current knowledge in the field of clinical and radiation oncology. This year, physicians, scientists and specialists from leading Czech medical and academic institutions came to the congress centre of the golf resort in Dřítč u Pardubic.
The programme offered a total of 26 expert lectures and opened a number of topical issues that are shaping the shape of modern oncological care today. For example, the lecture of the President of the Society of Radiation Oncology, Biology and Physics of the Czech Society of Radiation Oncology Prof. Martin Dolezel, M.D., Ph.D., attracted great attention. Is ctDNA a real "gamechanger" in therapy?, which focused on the possibilities of using circulating tumour DNA in personalised treatment, or Prof. Ales Ryska, M.D. , Ph.D. from the Fingerland Institute of Pathology, Faculty Hospital of Medicine, who presented the possibilities and limitations of liquid biopsy in predictive diagnostics of solid tumours.
Artificial intelligence in medicine was also an important topic of this year's event. Prof . Renata Soumarová, M.D., Ph.D., MBA and Tomáš Svoboda, M.D., Ph.D. from the Oncology and Radiotherapy Clinic of the University Hospital in Pilsen spoke about its current and future use in oncology. The discussion focused on the possibilities of using AI in diagnosis, treatment planning and data processing in clinical practice.
The importance of data analysis and systematic collection of information was highlighted by Jan Mužík, Ph.D. from the Institute of Health Information and Statistics in a lecture dedicated to data support of the National Oncology Programme.
Other contributions included a lecture by Prof. Jiří Petera, M.D., Ph.D. The controversy of treatment of peripheral post-chemotherapy neuropathy, which opened a discussion on complications of long-term oncological treatment. The Clinic of Oncology and Radiotherapy of the Faculty of Medicine of the HC had another deputy - the head of the clinic doc. MUDr. Milan Vošmik, Ph.D. focused on the issue of pancreatic cancer as one of the biggest challenges of current clinical oncology research. Bohuslav Melichar, M.D., Ph.D., Head of the Oncology Clinic of Olomouc University Hospital , analysed the advantages and limitations of the tumour-agnostic approach in oncology.
The international dimension of the conference was also added by two foreign guests - doc. Josef Kovařík, M.D., Ph.D. from Newcastle Hospital and Lubomír Skopal , M.D. , clinical oncologist working in French overseas departments, who presented their experience from foreign departments and current trends in European oncological care.
Representatives of AKESO Holding also took part in the programme. Prof. Ján Praško Pavlov, M.D., CSc. gave a lecture Can survival be a new disease? On the role of the patient after successful cancer treatment, which focused on the quality of life of patients after treatment. The lecture was also given by Prof. Karel Pacák, MD, DSc, FACE, Dhc, who worked for almost 30 years at the US National Institutes of Health, where he founded and was head of a prestigious endocrinology research programme.
Miroslav Žiaran, M.D., Zuzana Pleskačová , M. D. , and Aleš Hlávka, M.D ., Ph.D., spoke on behalf of Multiscan Cancer and Radiology Center , while Multiscan Pharma was represented by Jan Cihlo, PharmD.
The Controversies in Oncology conference again this year confirmed the importance of interdisciplinary cooperation and open professional discussion on topics that fundamentally affect the future of cancer diagnosis and treatment.
The programme also included a social evening during which the Benjo Band of Ivan Mládek and James Band performed. The informal part of the conference offered participants a space for further professional and personal meetings in a friendly atmosphere.
