Celebrated since 1965, this important day not only highlights the important role of nurses in the healthcare system, but also commemorates the birth of Florence Nigtingale, the founder of the nursing profession. Nigtingale was an English nurse who was instrumental in modernising nursing care and establishing standards of care and hygiene in the 19th century, and won many awards for her services, including being the first British woman to receive the Order of Merit for the British Empire.
Florence Nigtingale's legacy has been built upon by other nurses around the world. Their commitment and unstinting dedication to patient care is admirable and deserves great respect. We too recognize the important and irreplaceable role of all our nurses and wish to express our support and admiration for them.
