The active role of the gynaecological nurse in the prevention and early diagnosis of breast cancer was the topic of a course held on the last Friday in November at our centre. It was organized by PROJECT 35, headed by Professor Petra Tesarova from the Oncology Clinic of the 1st Faculty of Medicine of the Charles University in Prague. The event was attended by forty nurses, who listened to a rich lecture programme and learned how to properly proceed with self-examination.

PROJECT 35 is a special program that offers women objective information about the possibility of breast cancer even at a young age and highlights the need for regular preventive examinations at specialized mammology centers. At the same time, it provides sick women with counselling services and the possibility of lifelong consultation with specialists.

The course The Active Role of the Gynaecological Nurse in the Prevention and Early Diagnosis of Breast Cancer is travelling with PROJECT 35 to oncology centres across the Czech Republic. Its aim is to educate nurses, but it also emphasizes the importance of prevention and proper self-examination.

The topics of the course in Pardubice focused on breast cancer in young women and hormonal risks, epidemiology of breast cancer in the age group of young women, indications for mammography, ultrasound and NMR and genetic testing in breast cancer. The conclusion of the program was reserved for guidance on proper self-examination through educational videos and the opportunity to try self-examination on a breast and testicular model.

The four-hour course was conducted by Prof. Petra Tesarova, M.D., CSc., who was also one of the lecturers. The Pardubice Oncology Department was represented by Multiscan Oncology Centre doctor MUDr. Dana Dvořáková and another lecturer, radiologist MUDr. Zuzana Poulová from EUC Pardubice, also accepted the invitation.
