Multiscan Cancer Centre has introduced new application sheets. The innovation has significantly simplified the process of preparation and application of chemotherapy treatment

In the past year, intensive work began on the renewal of existing application protocols necessary for the treatment schedule of patients undergoing chemotherapy. After the first draft, improvements continued to be made to make the work easier not only for doctors and nurses, but also for pharmacists from the Multiscan Pharma subsidiary that prepares the drugs.

The use of the electronic application sheet begins with the treating physician, who selects a predefined cytostatic regimen based on the findings and tailors it to the individual patient. Thanks to the new functionalities of the current protocols, this has greatly simplified and accelerated the process of filling it out and further accelerated the transfer of information to Multiscan Pharma's central cytostatics preparation room.

Compared to the original protocols, some functions and data that were previously entered manually have been automated. For example, the newly defined application sheets can automatically adjust the cytostatic dose calculated according to the patient's body surface and laboratory result or generate the date of the next application. At the same time, the premedications used to alleviate nausea during chemotherapy have been standardised, with a positive impact on pharmacoeconomics.

The new application sheets, which are used both in Pardubice and in the detached workplaces in Ústí nad Orlicí and Svitavy and Hořovice, are also a significant help for the nurses who administer chemotherapy to the patient. According to the clear schedule, they know exactly in what order and when to administer the drug and premedication to the patient, and at the same time, important instructions for the administration of the drug are given on the protocol. All this is also done automatically based on predefined requirements.

The new protocols, which are accessible to healthcare professionals via a common electronic system, also have the benefit of checking the accuracy of the prepared medication and its administration. The application sheet, the patient identification bracelet and the reader for data accuracy are assigned a single code, which eliminates confusion between the patient or the drug being administered.

Doctors, nurses and the quality department of the Comprehensive Cancer Centre of the Pardubice Region, colleagues from Multiscan Pharma and software developers from MEDORO s.r.o. collaborated on the innovation of the application sheets .

"We are satisfied with the current form of the application sheets. Partial automation and simplification will facilitate the work of all those who use them on a daily basis. There is always room for improvement, so we already have new ideas that we will gradually put into practice," says Dana Dvořáková, MD, Head of Clinical Oncology, who participated in the creation of the current electronic protocols.
