Multiscan introduces the Cyto-Set system at all its sites to increase the safe preparation and application of drugs in chemotherapy treatment

The administration of intravenous chemotherapy in oncology departments is often an unavoidable part of the treatment of many cancers. The choice of administration devices for chemotherapy administration is essential for the correct and safe administration of these drugs.

"Infusion lines and other devices used for the administration of conventional drugs do not meet the requirements for the administration of cytostatics. They do not allow the subsequent administration of several drugs and are not adapted for the safe rinsing of the infusion line after administration. Therefore, a safe disconnection of the administration line without risk of dropping the cytostatic drug and the administration of the total dose of the drug cannot be guaranteed. This can be critical especially in the case of small volumes of drugs up to 100 ml," explained Deputy Chief Pharmacist Jan Cihlo, PharmD.

Because of these aspects, Multiscan is gradually introducing a system of Cyto-Sets at its sites that overcome the disadvantages of conventional application aids.

"With the use of Cyto-Sets, we are able to minimize the risks of contamination for healthcare workers while ensuring safe drug administration to patients. We have been using them for a long time at the Pardubice Oncology Centre and we are expanding them to the detached outpatient clinics in Chrudim, Ústí nad Orlicí and Svitavy," said the head nurse of the Multiscan Oncology Centre Mgr. Ľubica Elichová, DiS.

The Cyto-Set® is a sterile, single-use infusion system that enables the administration of cytotoxic drugs by gravity or pressure. When used together with the main Cyto-Set® infusion line with flushing solution and connectors (Cyto-Set Mix®) connected to the bags with individual drugs, this kit creates a closed system from preparation in the pharmacy, application in the ward to disposal after administration.

The Cyto-Set® does not need to be disconnected during the administration of the drug regimen infusions, although this is also possible and safe after sufficient rinsing. Flushing of the infusion line after infusion administration ensures administration of the total dose, unlike a conventional infusion line where up to 10-15 ml of the treatment dose may remain unadministered.
