The traditional dragon boat race on the Berounka River in Beroun for the first time on 3 September was attended by representatives of Multiscan from Pardubice.
A record 36 crews took part in the 11th edition of the Beroun Dragon this year, and many spectators also came, so the Camp Na Hrázi, where the race took place, was really busy.
Last year one crew from Hořovice and one from Beroun entered the race, this year the Hořovice hospital had two crews in the race and the Beroun rehabilitation hospital even three, and for the first time a crew from Pardubice was also formed. Friday was devoted to crew training and strategizing, first on the water and then in the camp with good drinks and live music.
The boats, derived from the god of the waters - the dragon, are 12.5 metres long and can accommodate twenty paddlers, 10 on the left and 10 on the right. The final twenty-two crew members are then supplemented by a coxswain standing at the stern and a drummer sitting on a high stool at the front, who beats a leather drum to set the rhythm of the paddling. The bows and sterns of the boats are decorated with a carved dragon's head and tail.
Although our crew jumped in the first time in this race among the last, the greatest reward for all was to spend a pleasant day by the Berounka river, to have a chance to talk in a completely informal environment, to have some fun and to relax from the demanding and highly responsible work.
"The location did not play a role in this case, we were glad that we arrived and did not beat each other up. Anyway, it was an amazing, unforgettable experience," says Iva Víšková, a nurse at the Multiscan Pardubice Oncology Centre.
