Another astronomical exhibition is heading to the cancer centre

18. 4. 2024

Two years ago, the first exhibition of astronomical photographs by ESO photo ambassador and member of the East Bohemian branch of the Czech Astronomical Society Zdenek Bardon went to patients and employees in hospitals in the Pardubice and Hradec Králové regions. In 2023, the Úpice Observatory managed to obtain a subsidy for the acquisition of another astronomical exhibition from the European Southern Observatory (ESO), and so the exhibition of Zdenek Bardon's photographs "My Lover is the Universe" was realized at the beginning of 2024.

The opening of the exhibition took place on 2 April 2024 in the conference hall of the Multiscan Clinical Oncology Building on the premises of the hospital in Pardubice. It can be viewed here until the end of June 2024.

The environment of hospitals, despite modernisations and gradual improvements in their appearance, is probably not always pleasant for most visitors. The aim was to make astronomy and the European Southern Observatory more popular, but also to give people a fresh view into the depths of space and make the patients' stay in the medical facility more pleasant.

The whole exhibition includes 11 panels focusing on several astronomical areas. Let's mention the panels Comets, Zodiacal Light, Stardust, Southern Starry Sky and others, which are filled with original images taken by Zdenek Bardon, both directly under the Chilean sky at ESO observatories and on his "astronomical journey".

The introductory panel then briefly describes the astrophotographer's journey as a member of the astronomy club of the small observatory in Jaroměř, through his participation in astronomy camps at the Úpice Observatory, to the inside of the largest telescopes of the European Southern Observatory. And, of course, under the light pollution of the little damaged sky of these observatories.

The exhibition will not stay in Pardubice for long and will move to the Rehabilitation Clinic of the University Hospital in Hradec Králové in July 2024.

Finally, we would like to thank the European Southern Observatory, the ESON team and all those who participated in the preparation and realization of the exhibition. We hope that, like the previous exhibition, this one will also please the eye of the connoisseur and the astronomical layman.
