Canisterapy is a therapeutic method that uses a specially trained dog to support the psychosocial health of patients. Properly performed, the technique contributes to the development of motor skills, speech, communication skills, as well as social sensitivity, stress relief, psychological relaxation or detachment from the hospital environment. The aim of the activity is to promote a successful healing process.
The therapy dog Eny, who visits our patients one day a week, is a two-year-old, specially trained female border collie. She has a calm nature and is very friendly.
"After a trial day in early January, when we tested how Eny would perform and how patients would respond to her, it was clear that canister therapy would become a regular activity at Multiscan. Eny looks forward to each visit and the patients welcome her presence. Because we attend regularly, some people check in with us when they arrive, which is very nice. I am glad that Eny not only makes me happy, but also the patients who need her so much," says Jana Flégrová.
Multiscan is constantly expanding its services, so the management of the cancer center did not hesitate when the opportunity of on-site canister therapy under the guidance of a tribal employee presented itself.
"While we treat the body, we fully understand that treating the soul is equally important. A cancer diagnosis often brings with it a battered psyche and fears for the future. We therefore try to alleviate the daily worries about our health and the challenging treatment with supportive activities. One of them is canister therapy, which we hope and believe will distract the patient at least for a short time and bring him or her back to other thoughts," adds Multiscan's director Ing. Mgr. Martina Kulštejnová.
