World Cancer Day is initiated by the Geneva-based NGO Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) and its more than 800 partner organisations worldwide. The year 2020 falls within the three-year campaign, which is accompanied by the slogan "I am and I will".
The number of newly diagnosed diseases is increasing worldwide, yet mortality rates have remained more or less stable or even declined slightly over the long term thanks to available and increasingly effective treatments and early diagnosis.
Early detection of cancer is aided by screening programmes - full mammography screening, which enables women aged 45 and over to have regular preventive examinations every two years, cervical screening for early detection of cervical cancer since 2008, and a colorectal screening programme targeting the over-50 population, launched in 2009. In addition to the importance of preventive check-ups, experts recommend following a healthy lifestyle, getting enough exercise and avoiding excessive risks such as smoking and excessive alcohol consumption.
