The seminar on biosimilar treatment, biological and biosimilar drugs was attended by 30 nurses not only from the Multiscan Oncology and Radiology Centre, but also from the inpatient part of the Department of Clinical and Radiation Oncology at Pardubice Hospital.
The seminar was opened by Bc. Michaela Tůmová, Director of the Jessenius Dialogue, which has been operating since 2009 and whose main goal is to increase the awareness of the general public about serious diseases, their course and treatment. At the same time, the organization strives for better communication between health professionals and patients and between patients and family members.
A short introduction was followed by a lecture by Prof. Samuel Vokurka, M.D., Ph.D., who introduced the nurses to the issue of biological treatment, summarized the basic concepts related to biosimilars and explained their advantages and disadvantages, among other things.
The professor was subsequently complemented by Bc. Jitka Wintnerová with the topic The role of the nurse in the application of biosimilars. She gave valuable advice to the participants of the seminar regarding communication with the patient during the administration of biosimilars and emphasized good information and consideration for the patient.
*What are biosimilars?
Biosimilars are approved biological medicines that are marketed after the patent protection of the original reference product has expired. Biosimilars are as effective, safe and of the same quality as their predecessors. Before approval, biosimilars are extensively tested and validated in numerous analytical tests and studies. Biosimilars are used to treat millions of patients worldwide with the same results as those achieved with the original biologics.
