The patient's journey through cancer treatment

27. 2. 2024

Cancer treatment is one of the most challenging disciplines in medicine. It is a process that involves the care of physicians and specialists across disciplines along with advanced technology. Professional medical staff, their empathetic approach and the modern equipment available make the patient's journey through treatment significantly easier. How we approach the therapy at the Multiscan Cancer and Radiology Centre in Pardubice was explained by Head Nurse Mgr. Ľubica Elichová, DiS., MBA.

Constipation ambulance

An initial outpatient clinic for patients with newly diagnosed cancer, where they meet with specialists and receive information about their planned treatment.

The patient learns the actual diagnosis from the specialist doctor to whom he/she has come with difficulties, based on conventional imaging methods and histological or cytological examination. He or she then comes directly to Multiscan, where the planned course of treatment, which varies from patient to patient depending on the diagnosis and the stage of the disease, is determined in the consultation room. If further examinations are needed, the nurse will arrange them completely and give the patient the dates when and where to attend. "It is an advantage if the patient comes to the consultant's office with an escort. The amount of information they receive at the first consultation is so extensive that they are usually unable to remember everything after leaving the outpatient clinic," says Ľubica Elichová.

Radiotherapy

Cancer treatment using ionising radiation to damage the DNA of cancer cells, leading to their destruction or stopping their growth.

Except for the treatment of children and hematological malignancies, the Cancer and Radiology Center provides treatment for all types of cancer. Radiotherapy includes radiation treatment with a linear accelerator and brachytherapy equipment. It is worth mentioning the various types of radiation, for example, the so-called stereotaxy, a highly specialised method of external radiotherapy, which consists in the very precise application of high doses of radiation targeted to the tumour in a short period of time, which greatly enhances the effect. Or so-called respiratory gating, a radiation technique that uses physiological breathing movements to reduce the dose to healthy tissues and, for example, spares the lungs and heart in the case of breast cancer.

Clinical Oncology

A branch of medicine that uses methods such as chemotherapy, hormone therapy, biological and targeted therapies, and immunotherapy.

At Multiscan we provide treatment for patients from the Pardubice Region from the Chrudim, Orlicko Ústí and Svitavsko regions as well as for some patients from the Central Bohemia Region. We provide cytostatic and hormonal treatment at all of our locations, as well as biological and targeted treatment and immunotherapy in Pardubice. The Pardubice hospital has twenty beds for the application of oncological treatment. We also provide applications in inpatient hospitals in Ústí nad Orlicí, Svitavy and Hořovice. Cytostatics and biological treatment preparations are prepared centrally in the pharmacy of our sister company Multiscan Pharma.

Improved outpatient clinic in Ústí nad Orlicí

The oncology outpatient clinic in Ústí nad Orlicí also provides cancer care to patients. This year, the Multiscan detached workplace has undergone extensive reconstruction at a cost of CZK 12 million, thanks to which the premises are more pleasant for patients and staff and the medical, office and technical equipment is more modern.

"The outpatient clinic of clinical oncology in Ústí nad Orlicí is the second workplace after Svitavy to undergo reconstruction. The beautiful large premises allowed us to realise our ideas, both in terms of practicality and architecture. Just like the Svitava oncology outpatient clinic, the Orlicko Ústí one is also a strategic place for providing quality oncological care in the Pardubice Region. The extensive reconstruction has only confirmed the importance of this facility and the need for improvements for patients and staff," says AKESO Executive Director Ing. Mgr. Martina Kulštejnová.

Patients undergo demanding treatment here and it is of utmost importance that they feel comfortable. The clinical oncology building and the detached outpatient clinic offer sufficiently large working spaces, top-class equipment and a pleasant environment and comfort for our patients and employees.

Dispensary

Dispensary care is the long-term monitoring of a patient's condition. The aim is to catch and treat the disease early when a relapse (return of the disease) occurs.

If all signs of disease have subsided, laboratory values have returned to normal and imaging tests show no findings, the patient is said to be in remission. However, this does not necessarily mean a complete cure, as the patient may still have deposits in the body that cannot be detected by these methods, so it is necessary to continue to actively monitor the patient. "In the dispensary, patients are monitored for at least 5 years after diagnosis at regular intervals, which are gradually extended," explains Ľubica Elichová.
